3 Things Successful People Understand About Goals that Most People Miss
We have all heard tips about about goal setting like writing them down, making them measurable and giving them a timeline. Many of us are so focused on what actions we need to take to achieve our goals that we miss these three important steps for going after what we want in our lives.
1. Leverage the Power of CONSTRAINT
When we sit down to set goals, we often get excited and it can be tempting to set multiple big goals all at once such as, lose 50lbs, make a million dollars and pick up a new hobby. Successful people know that when we set multiple big goals at the same time our brains get overwhelmed and instead of getting to work on our goals, we get tired before making traction and give up all together. Successful people know that we are more likely to achieve our goal if we allow our brain to fully focus on it. Constraining our focus to ONE big goal at a time allows us to make progress faster than if we try to work on multiple big goals all at once. Pro tip: Pick one big goal at a time and achieve it, then move on to the next big goal, your brain will thank you.
2. Visualize WHO you need to Become as a Person
When successful people set goals, they often visualize the future version of themselves who has already achieved the goal. Connecting with the future version of ourselves who has already achieved our goal is a powerful tool to guide us towards success. This future version of us has all the answers we need to achieve our goals since they have already done it. When you are setting your next goal ask yourself, “Who do I need to become to achieve this goal?” “How does that person act?” and “What is going on inside their head?” We can use that person as a model for how we need to show up to achieve our goals.
3. Like Your “WHY”
Successful people understand that it is important to be honest with ourselves about why we want to achieve something. The reason we take on a goal can often give us a clear prediction of whether we will be successful in achieving it. Our “why” is the fuel that will carry us over the finish line. If we are fueled by negative emotions like scarcity or insufficiency, we are much more likely to burn out along the way and give up compared fueling ourselves with positive emotions like love, acceptance, or abundance. Liking our reason for wanting to achieve our goal is what will keep us going when we want to quit. Next time you set a goal ask yourself “Why do I want to achieve this?”, be honest with yourself and make sure you like your reason. If your “why” is not compelling enough to you it will not be enough to keep you going when you want to quit. On the other hand, if you have a strong “why” then the sky is the limit and you will be truly UNSTOPPABLE.
